Signs Your Relationship Might Benefit From Couples Therapy

Couples often wait too long to start therapy, assuming it's only for relationships that are already falling apart. In my experience, the couples who get the most out of it are usually the ones who come in before things reach a breaking point.

Here are a few signs it might be time.

You keep having the same argument. Different topic, same fight. If you can predict exactly how a disagreement will go before it starts, there's likely a pattern underneath the surface issue.

Conversations turn into shutdowns or blowups. One of you goes quiet and walks away, or things escalate fast. Either way, if hard conversations rarely end in real resolution, you're probably stuck in a cycle rather than working through actual disagreements.

You feel more like roommates than partners. Busy schedules and daily life can let connection quietly fade without any single dramatic moment causing it. If you can't remember the last time you felt truly close, it's worth paying attention to.

There's been a breach of trust. A lie, a broken promise, an affair — these don't tend to repair themselves with time alone. They usually need real, guided conversation.

One or both of you are avoiding certain topics. Money, family, intimacy, the future — conversations you've quietly agreed not to have tend to grow heavier over time, not lighter.

Therapy Isn't a Last Resort

I work with couples at every stage — newly dating, engaged, married for decades. Some come in wanting to rebuild after a rupture. Others simply want to get better at handling the ordinary friction of being close to another person. Both are valid reasons to start.

What Sessions Actually Look Like

I use Relational Life Therapy, which tends to be direct and practical. We look at what's actually happening underneath your disagreements, not just the topic on the surface, and build real tools you can use outside of session — not just insight you talk about once and forget.

If any of this sounds familiar, it doesn't mean your relationship is in trouble. It might just mean it's time for some support. I offer a free consultation so we can talk through what's going on. Contact me for an initial consultation for couples therapy.
